How to Find a Hiring Managers Contact Info
How to Find a Hiring Managers Contact InfoHow to Find a Hiring Managers Contact InfoWhile job ads typically provide information that ensures applications will get into the right hands, sometimes having a direct contact can make a big difference.Job hunters sending out feelers to companies for which theyd like to work often must play detective to figure out where their letters and resumes should be sent. Though this process to find a hiring managers contact info can be a bit more laborious than simply sending material to a generic help desk or info box, the effort can have significant payback. And even if youre applying directly to a job listing, sending your information straight to a hiring manager can put you ahead of the competition.Because there are so many challenges that your application must overcome before it is ever seen by the manager, it is well worth spending your time to find this persons information and gain a fair evaluation, says career expertLavie Margolin, author ofW inning Answers to 500 Interview Questions. The hiring manager is the one that has the real need for you in his/her department and if you can convince this person that you are the right fit for the job, he/she can advocate for you.Luckily, finding a hiring managers contact info is usually just a matter of persistence. Here are a variety of tips to help with the questScour the companys website.Businesses sometimes provide detailed instructions on who to contact and what to send in sections with names like Employment, About Us, or Work for Us. The company website also may contain biographies of key staff members or an employee directory. Look for the person who is likely to be the one in need of your specific services, such as the editorial director or the managing editor if youre looking for awriting gig.Crack the email code.Found what you think is the right name but lack contact info? Margolin suggests looking for the email address of any real person at the company and studying its s tructure. Is it formatted like Firstinitial.Lastname, Lastname.Firstname, etc.? Once you understand the system for one person and you have the hiring managers name, you can use the same system most of the time to reach the hiring manager.Use Google.Searching on the Internet can possibly find you a wealth of information. If you have a name, but cannot find how the company structures their email addresses, try Googling the persons name, plus the name of the company or the city where they live. This may bring up a blog or social media where they might have their email address listed.Alternatively, you could search the job title, plus the name of the company. You may find that the hiring manager posted the job listing somewhere else, such as Twitter. You could send a tweet or direct message to try to gain an email address, or at the very least, address your application to their name, even if you have a general email address.Seek help on LinkedIn.The person you wish to find may have aLin kedIn profilewith contact information. Members also can go to a companys profile and look at the How Youre Connected section off to the right. Someone in your network may be able to make an introduction or at least tell you how email addresses at that organization are structured.Ask for advice. As a last resort, a call to the companys main number or an email to the help desk is worth a shot. State your area of interest and ask who would be the appropriate person to contact. While you may get told to simply send yourapplicationto the general inbox for it to be routed appropriately, politely persist for a real contact if possible. The sooner your material ends up in the right hands, the sooner the hirer can realize how great youd be to have on boardRachel Jaycontributed to this post.

New study explains how an open office plan can be sexist
New study explains how an open office plan can be sexistNew study explains how an open office plan can be sexistOpen office plans are designed to break down the physical and metaphoric walls between us, but a new study found that they were guilty of putting up new kinds of barriers between employees, reinforcing the same gendered hierarchies that they aimed to deconstruct. In the study published in Gender, Work and Organization, researchers at Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Bedfordshire followed1,000 U.K. government employees as they transitioned from a traditional office design to a mora open plan one in their new building. Now, the office space had durchschaubar glass everywhere, identical desks, and undefined large spaces for collaboration. Everyone could see everyone, and that was just how the architect of the building, who was kept anonymous in the study, liked it.As he bluntly put it, I think its like going to a nudist beach, you know, first, youre a little bit w orried that everyones looking at you but then you think, hang on, everybody else is naked, no-ones looking at each other. I think thats whatll happen, theyll get on with it.But not everyone did get over it.The unintended side effects of these new design features, the researchers learned in interviews with employees, was the increased sense of surveillance for everyone, but particularly women, at work. Women felt more exposed. As one female manager put it, If youre upset about something, theres nowhere to go. Where can you go? All you can do is go to the Ladies bathroom, so theres nowhere that you can go and speak to somebody on a one-to-one basis where you cant be observed. And the eyeballs observing coworkers were predominantly male. Although visibility placed curbs on this kind of behavior - watching had to be done surreptitiously - the building provided a space where it was much easier for men to exercise this kind of male gaze, researchers found in their observations.Open offi ce plans make women more image-consciousAware of the new surveillance, women started dressing differently at work to manage their image. Traditional offices signal rank through fancy desks and door labels - now women signaled their status through clothes. One female senior manager made the switch from wearing cardigans to jackets because she said, A cardi says admin. Theres a whole subtle ranking and I think for women its particularly significant. The more senior your role, the fancier your clothes got.Successful accomplishment as a high-status networker required dressing up (wearing a jacket rather than a cardi which might cause one to be misidentified as admin), whereas taking up a lower status role was accomplished by dressing down and staying put in ones own office, the researchers wrote. Senior staffers became more likely to move around more the office, while lowly employees became less likely to venture out from their area of the office. To be fair, not all women felt oppressed by the new space. They spoke of new freedoms to be more fully themselves they walked across and confronted people they looked actively at others they requested adaptations to the loos and they accepted and enjoyed being visible, the study noted. But for others, the open office space became a constant warden who was watching their every move. As the researchers concluded, There appeared to be such an implicit ranking system in these aspects, so that senior women presented themselves and acted in a way that expressed look at me and their junior counterparts sought to achieve the opposite move and blend into the background.

Relationship Between Health Issues and Law Enforcement
Relationship Between Health Issues and Law EnforcementRelationship Between Health Issues and Law EnforcementIf yure looking for a job in criminology or criminal justice, consider yourself forewarned law enforcement careers may be hazardous to your health. It has long been believed that police work is correlated with a host of diseases, illnesses, and ailments. Research Links Police Work to Poor Health Hard research by Doctor John Violanti, professor of social and preventative medicine at theUniversity of Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professionals has confirmed this. The fact is, police officers are far more likely to suffer numerous health complications than members of the general workforce. There are two primary factors that have been identified as being associated with most of the health issues officers face shift work and stress. Shift work is considered to be any hours worked outside of standard daylight hours, typically between 700 AM and 600 PM. Stress, of cou rse, is understood to be a persons response to external stimuli, situations, and incidents, known as stressors. No Rest for the Weary The schwimmbad news is, if there are two things law enforcement careers have plenty of, they are shift work and stress. This adds up to the potential for plenty of health problems down the road for police officers. According to the United States Department of Labors Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are approximately 15 million Americans, or 9 percent of the total workforce, who work non-standard or irregular hours. By contrast, a majority of the police force is assigned to shift work, either rotating into and out of night shifts or working them permanently. Health Issues So whats the problem with shift work? In a word, sleep. Everyone needs it, but not everyone gets it.Police officers are among those who get it the least. According to Doctor Claire Caruso and Doctor Roger Rosa, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, people need sleep similarly to the way in which they need food and water. Sleep Is a Necessity, Not an Option Sleep, as anyone who has ever been tired can attest, is a biological necessity. Healthy sleep is vital to maintaining life, overall health and workdistribution policy safety. When we are tired or fatigued, our ability to make decisions is diminished and our immune system is inhibited. We are also at a greater risk for mental and psychological ailments. Sleep Patterns Shift work affects sleep patterns for a variety of reasons. First of all, according to Dr. Caruso and Dr. Rosa, humans are hardwired to sleep when its dark outside. Unfortunately, working during non standard hours necessarily requires sleeping during non standard hours. The problem is that working nights and sleeping days goes against our biology. Its unnatural for us to be up and working during the night, which contributes to a feeling of tiredness or even fatigue through a shift. Likewise, its unnatural for us to sleep during daylight hours, making it harder to fall and stay asleep in the daytime. In addition to the biological issue that affects sleeping during the day, there are practical and logistical issues, as well. Officers who have families or who live with people working regular hours will often find their sleep interrupted by other people in the home, who are understandably awake when the officers are not. Even if they live alone, the ambient noise of normal daytime activities can impede daytime sleeping. Health Problems from Poor Sleep According to Dr. Rosa and Dr. Caruso, lack of sleep and poor sleeping habits contribute to a variety of health problems such as Decreased mental facultiesDecreased immune systemDepressionWork-related injuriesStrained relationshipsHeart diseaseCancerMood disorders Family Life Aside from sleep issues, though, shift work can place a tremendous strain on personal relationships and family life. Whether on permanent or rotating shifts, some officers may go weeks or even months at a time without spending quality time with their friends and families due to their work schedule and sleep patterns.?? BCOPS Researchers from the University of Buffalo worked closely with the Buffalo Police Department to produce the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress (BCOPS) study, published in the International Journal of Emergency Mental Health.BCOPS suggests a strong link between police stress and poor health. High Demands, High Stress The study was predicated on the belief that high demands are placed upon law enforcement, which would, in turn, lead to chronic health problems. It is widely understood that police officers face tremendous physical and psychological stress on a daily basis. Generally speaking, the encounters police officers have with the public are unpleasant ones rarely are officers called to give someone good news. Officers are required to deal with numerous stress-inducing situations, including scenes of death and dismemberment, argumentative traffic violators, aggressive subjects, and miserable, upset, angry or depressed individuals. Add to this the pressure, uncertainty and yes, even fear, of wondering whether the next person they interact with is going to be the one that tries to take their life or who will force them to take the life of another. It is easy to imagine, then, how stressful the job can easily become.? Stress, Law Enforcement Careers,? and Health The BCOPS study draws a correlation between the daily stress of police work and obesity, suicide, sleeplessness, and cancer. It also confirmed the relationship between sleeplessness, shift work, and overall health, suggesting an increase in metabolic syndrome, which includes abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, schrift 2 diabetes and resistance to insulin and possible stroke. Dr. Violantis research produced some interesting findings 40 percent of officers were obese as compared to 32 percent of th e general population.25 percent of officers demonstrated signs of metabolic syndrome compared to 18.7 percent of the general population.Officers faced an increased risk of Hodgkins lymphoma and brain cancer after 30 years of service.Suicide rates were eight times higher among active duty law enforcement officers as opposed to those who had retired or resigned from the police force. Its a Dirty Job, But Somebodys Gotta Do It Health hazards aside, society needs police officers. Someone has to do the job, and many of the stresses that come with it are unavoidable. Its well known that law enforcement careers are dangerous anyway, without poor health being taken into account. Working Toward a Healthy Career What, then, can officers do to mitigate stress and its associated problems and increase their chances at a happy and healthy life? Here are a few tips from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health When working shift work, allow yourself enough time to get adequ ate sleep between shifts.Stay away from heavy foods and alcoholic beverages before going to sleep.Reduce your caffeine intake and stay away from caffeine and other stimulants for several hours before you try to sleep.Choose a quiet, dark, cool and comfortable place to sleep, especially if sleeping during nonstandard hours.Eat a healthy, balanced diet.Establish and maintain an exercise routine to reduce stress, improve personal health and help you sleep. If you find that youre having difficulty dealing with the stresses of the job or getting enough sleep, seek professional medical help as soon as possible. Why Work in Law Enforcement? With all of the stresses and potential health issues that come with the job, why would anyone choose to work in a law enforcement career? The fact is that with a positive, healthy outlook and good sleep and exercise habits, law enforcement careers can prove to be fun and rewarding. Police officer careers can offer plenty of benefits, both tangible a nd intangible, and are among the highest paying jobs in criminology and criminal justice. Of course, idealism and altruism also play a role. If you think you have what it takes, working as a police officer may just be the perfect criminology career for you.

Leaders, Do You Have a Traffic Problem
Leaders, Do You Have a Traffic Problem Recently, I came across a popular unattributed quote floating around online (in a meme, of course). It states,You are not stuck in traffic, you are traffic. Its a powerful comment on the tendency of people to remove themselves from blame in schwimmbad situations and theres a business lesson to pull from this idea, too.Leaders, if something in your organization isnt working whether it be boring meetings orineffective communication Ive got some tough news Youre part of the problem. The good news, however, is you can fix things if you commit to change. As a business coach, I work with businesses to identify these traffic issues, and I help leaders enact change through use of the Rockefeller Habits, a collection of business fundamentals developed by Verne Harnish. The habits arent just friendly reminders or general guidelines they are the aggregated best practices of the worlds most accomplished organizations. The Ro ckefeller Habits are effective, but they require real effort from a leader willing to accept responsibility for organizational issues. If you recognize traffic problems at your organization and are willing to accept responsibility, here are two essential stepsto take if you want to eliminate those issuesStep 1 Create Meeting RhythmsEstablishing meeting rhythm is a great way to ensure that quick, consistent, and accurate communication keeps flowing from top to bottom (and bottom to top) in your organization. Set up a rhythm ofregularly scheduled, consistent meetings where your gruppe members can discuss items for which they are accountable and that erleichterung organizational and individual priorities. In my work, I have found that one of the most essential and effective meetings is the daily huddle. Now, a lot of leaders scoff when I insist that they needtoadd another meeting to their daily schedules, but trust me This one is vital to organizational success.Set aside a time each mor ning for your entire team (yes the entire team) to gather for 10-15 minutes. At this meeting, everyone should discuss their daily schedules and any other information the rest of the team should know, progress on key performance indicators, tasks they need help with or are stuck on, and nonnegotiable priorities that need to be accomplished that day.As a leader, make sure toprep for each huddle with intention and zeal Gather beforehand a few high-level insights that the entire team needs to know about, and throw in a little something extra from a personal standpoint, such as a recent win or struggle youve experienced. If you demonstrate a willingness to share, others will learn to do the same. The next thing you know, people will actually look forward to the huddle and even depend on it.Another meeting we encourage is a biweekly one-on-one. This is an opportunity for a team member to sit down with a manager to talk openly and honestly about workloads, shifting priorities, struggles a t work, and even struggles at home. Aside from giving leaders the inside sensationsmeldung on team functionality, these meetings provide employees with the opportunity to vent to someone who can take actionon the matter. Otherwise, an employees negativity could spread to others in the office.Step 2 Install AccountabilityThe second step is to incorporate accountability into these meetings, ensuring that team members are doing the things they have promised to do.Every single team member in your organization should leave these new meetings with action items or next steps towards a goal. If theyre not, the meetings arent being used correctly. (No wonder theyre boring for some of your people) Furthermore, you should check on tasks assigned in previous meetings to stay updated on their status and next steps.Preparing an agenda of discussion topics for each meeting can help keep meetings on track. Even a rough outline can help reign in conversation and keep people focused on the larger goa l at hand.During these meetings, track the conversation on some kind of visible medium, such as a document or a whiteboard. A visual representation of goals, action items, and reminders is a bold and memorable way to keep people organized and on track. The point of smarter meetings is to open up communication and help team members accomplish their goals. When you establish consistent rhythms, those pesky traffic problems will become a thing of the past. Ready to try it in your organization?JT Terrell is a certified Petra Coach.
