This Is Not A Job For The Impatient
Blog & website of children's book author Tara Lazar This is Not a Job for the Impatient Anticipation, anticipa-yay-tion. Itâs making me wait. Carly Simon sang it, then Heinz stole it: âItâs soooo good.â . OK, Iâm not waiting for ketchup here. It ainât all that good. This is not a job for the impatient. I used to work in high-tech where whole industries sprung up over breakfast, where innovation occurred during a coffee break and tomorrowâs ideas were outdated the day before yesterday. And now, publishing. Sure, the industry seems to be transforming rapidly with ebooks, book apps and new social media discovery tools, but manuscripts are pretty much bought the same way they have been for decades (with perhaps the exception of email submissions instead of postal mail). Editors still have to read and evaluate stories, and that requires thoughtful reflection. That takes time. Especially with thousands of them to sort through every week. Moreover, whole departments must agree upon a manuscriptâs merits. Itâs not just one editorâs opinion. The entire editorial team, the art department, marketing, sales, publicity, the publisherâ"all have a say in whether a story fits its list. And besides fitting inâ"will the book sell? Will it make a profit? Publishing, despite all its artistic ambitions, is a business after all. You can understand the myriad factors involved in an acquisition, but it doesnât make waiting on a submissionâs fate any easier. Iâm reminded of Schoolhouse Rockâs poor Bill sitting on Capitol Hill. Except his little ditty only lasted as long as a commercial break. What to do while you waitâ"weeks, months, maybe even a year? The best remedy is to write something new. Or play Candy Crush. No, really, write something new. Level 187 is impossible anyway. For what are we? Are we obsessive email checkers, phone call screeners and mailbox watchers? Well, yes. Yes we are. But we are not WAITERS. We are WRITERS. And writers write. So get on with it! And remember, besides âanticipa-yay-tionâ, Carly also sang âthese are the good old days.â (And sheâs the daughter of Simon & Schuster co-founder Richard L. Simon, so maybe she was truly singing about publishing. Not ketchup, Heinz.)

Size Doesnt Matter in Small Business Cultures - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Size Doesnt Matter in Small Business Cultures - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The expression storehouses corresponding to organization culture is regularly connected with bigger associations. Therefore I was confounded by a discussion with the CEO of a little, yet very much regarded not-for-benefit in my locale. She revealed to me she needed to improve collaboration in her association. That sounded regular and not bizarre to get notification from a private venture CEO. At that point, I examined somewhat more profound and she included, well, we have to separate the storehouses in our association, as well. In this way, what number of representatives do you have? I inquired. Seven. I answered, Goodness, that is fascinating. Would you be able to envision? Social storehouse issues with only seven all out individuals in a workplace? She decided not to recruit me to assist her with those difficulties. And afterward, under two years after the fact we reconnected at a vacation occasion at which time she gave me an update. I'm exceptionally annoyed with Sally (her previous CFO), she left me in August and just gave me the standard fourteen days' notification. I just tuned in. As I did, I was thinking, isn't it odd that in such a little association the CEO and CFO would have a relationship where the CEO would not have a sufficient believing relationship with her CFO to realize she was hoping to proceed onward? Clearly, after two years, the storehouses (even in the C-Suite) were as yet dug in. This is a hierarchical culture issue. All associations have a culture. Of course, in many things, size doesn't make a difference. Several key things to comprehend about authoritative societies: They create through one of two different ways, default (the most famous) or by plan. Anyway they build up the most significant influencer is the senior most pioneer of the association. The person, through their conduct and correspondence style, establishes the pace that streams all through. Diminish Drucker, the organizer and master of present day authoritative administration counseling once stated, culture has technique for lunch, implying that paying little heed to how extraordinary an association's procedure, if the association's way of life isn't in the opportune spot, the methodology will bomb wretchedly. Associations enormous and little contribute several thousands to a huge number of dollars to make their corporate system, yet put essentially nothing in making a culture that will be THE main impetus to move the procedure towards progress. This, I accept, is a generally accepted fact in business. However, it is abused in basically every organization, whether or not it has six, 600, 6000 or 60,000 individuals working in it. Just a not very many hit the nail on the head. Does yours? The basic inquiry to pose to when building up your organization's system is, does our present hierarchical culture work such that will bolster the fruitful usage of this methodology? On the off chance that the appropriate response is Yes, don't stop there. Test your presumptions behind that yes. Odds are those in the meeting room making the system do not understand whether that yes answer is valid. Remember that as you start making or altering your methodology for 2016.

Bots and Bugs in Harmony
Bots and Bugs in Harmony Bots and Bugs in Harmony Bots and Bugs in Harmony Robot creators have been copying lifeforms for quite a while. Creepy crawlies, warm blooded creatures, fish, reptilesyou name ittheyve all been tapped to make our machines progressively proficient, profitable, and entertaining. In any case, presently specialists at Switzerlands Ãcole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne are turning that procedure on its head. Rather than obtaining from the monsters, theyre helping them. Bertrand Collignon, an analyst at the college, has customized a modest, open, and not exceptionally creature like robot to assist ants with gathering food. In doing as such, he has made one of the primary absolutely self-sufficient robot/creature frameworks that outflanks what either the robots or the creatures could do all alone. Also, the achievement of this cooperative energy among creepy crawly and machine may sometime pivot and help us too. Scientists test the reaction of creatures to different signs produced by robots. Picture: EPA In embarking to assist ants with gathering their food, Collignon chose to separate the obligations among bot and bug. Ants would do the chasing and the robots would do the social event. Exactly how to do that gave Collignon his first test. Regardless of whether there is no food in the earth, there is a change in the conduct of ants, he says. There is a mood of action that can keep going for a couple of moments or hours. The movement isn't steady. One chance was to include the ants proceeding to out of a province. At the point when the stream stayed under a specific limit, the robots would accept the ants had not yet discovered food. At the point when it went over another limit, they would realize the ants had found a source. In any case, those edges are diverse for each subterranean insect province. Collignon needed a framework that would work with any settlement anyplace without the requirement for beginning information assortment or extra research. Recognizing and tallying singular ants is certainly not a basic programming issue. So Collignon chose to check the quantity of moving pixels at the passageway of a subterranean insect home. This direct technique would work with any settlement size. The last arrangement utilized a Raspberry Pi camera and PC at the mouth of the home. At the point when it recognized a sharp uptick in pixel movement, the gathering drones were sent in. These Thymio robots, programmable toys that cost about $200, followed the line of ants to the sugar source, got it for them, and conveyed it to the home. The ants didn't appear to be particularly grateful. We dont anticipate that them should understand that the robots are helping them, says Collignon. The entire set up was intended to be effectively repeated. The Raspberry Pi PC, the Thymio robots, and the Python programming language were totally made to help instruct kids. That was one of the thoughts, to keep everything available says Collignon. Anybody can do this examination at home or at a school once they have the product. Be that as it may, kids and ants arent the main ones to profit by this exploration. Such an automated framework would help in any circumstance where creatures are utilized as locators. Canines in air terminals, for example, are prepared to show a particular conduct when they discover medications or explosives. At this moment we need a human to decipher that conduct. With a framework like Collignons, You dont must be near the pooch to perceive what he is doing, so you could have a higher number of operators, he says. Essentially, many ferrets could be released in crumbled structures. Equipped with a biologger to screen their conduct, crisis laborers could know when they arrived at anybody caught in the rubble. There are some characteristic operators that can at present outflank counterfeit ones for certain assignments, Collignon says. For vitality the executives or detecting, its difficult to be on a par with nature. Michael Abrams is a free essayist. For Further Discussion We dont anticipate that them should understand that the robots are helping them. Prof. Bertrand Collignon, Ãcole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne

The One Lesson of the RBS Chair Snapchat Embarrassment
The One Lesson of the RBS Chair Snapchat Embarrassment Except if you're utilized in the worldwide financial industry you presumably missed the ongoing declaration that Royal Bank of Scotland director Rory Cullinan will before long be leaving his post. Bloomberg, the Guardian, and other news sources credit the flight to a conflict with different executives over methodology. One fascinating commentary to the story, nonetheless, places it in There yet for the finesse of God⦠region for any regular worker who utilizes internet based life for non-business purposesâ"or, so far as that is concerned, any parent who battles to remain associated with their web based life fixated high schooler. That is on the grounds that about a month back, British sensationalist newspapers distributed screen captures of Cullinan's Snapchat selfies subtitled with Exhausting gathering xx, not a devotee of executive gatherings, and Another god forsaken meeting. The Sun revealed that Cullinan had sent the messages to his high school girl, who presented the screen captures on her own Instagram channel the previous spring utilizing the hashtag #daddylikestoselfie. Contrasted with different infamous vocation harming internet based life bungles, Cullinan's faux pas appears to be really mellow. Some may even be enchanted by this powerful investor's endeavors to bond with his little girl. In any case, the Snapchat occurrence couldn't have helped Cullinan's relationship with his boss or colleagues, as Bloomberg's Matt Levine cleverly brings up. Regardless of whether the executive's flight is to a great extent disconnected to his Snapchats, there's an exercise in the entire sceneâ"and for once, it doesn't have to do with dealing with the security settings on your records. Without a doubt, it's consistently a smart thought to keep security settings high on any online life accounts. In any case, in all actuality you can't generally keep up authority over your messages. Both Instagram and Snapchat have as of late observed immense penetrates including pictures clients thought were private. Scouts report diving profound into the online profiles of potential recruits, right down to their language structure and spelling. Also, the most recent occurrence just demonstrates that regardless of whether you are watchful, your companions or relatives may not generally be so cautious. The activity: Wait a beat before distributing words or pictures, regardless of the crowd. Recall that something that glances guiltless in one setting could consume you in another. From the viewpoint of a potential manager, what you compose is demonstrative of your character. At the point when you're recruiting for an occupation, you have almost no information about applicants, so every bit of information that you do get conveys a tremendous measure of weight, says previous employing supervisor Alison Green, who runs the profession blog askamanager.org. On one hand, it's disappointing that a minor failure to understand the situation can adversely affect one's employmentâ"and that even benevolent individuals need to stress that an old Tweet or photograph could cast a shadow over their vocations. Then again, the straightforwardness of specific types of internet based life can be a power for good, pushing individuals to pick their words all the more cautiously, sympathetic, and capably. For Cullinan's situation, that may have implied gulping his work fuss until night-time, and selecting a less complex message like I miss you.

Cite advantages that come from WFH.Offer a trial period of evaluation, 90 days, for example, to give the employer a chance to alter the arrangement if needed. And then once you accept the offer inclusive of your work-from-home component, work your tail off to make the work from home arrangement work out! Step by step instructions to Train Your Staff on Phone Etiquette Telephone behavior has tumbled to the wayside, notwithstanding there being a larger number of telephones on earth than individuals now in our history. This issue is particularly apparent in the work environment where representatives, especially more youthful, unpracticed representatives, don't have the foggiest idea how to cooperate with individuals on the telephone. With such an extensive amount our correspondence coming as content nowadays, it's no big surprise individuals are battling to talk to each other on the telephone. It's gotten practically worthy now to simply send messages and instant messages for everything from requests for employment to crisis messages.evalIf you run an association and you need to contrast the opposition, consider improving the manner in which your staff picks up the telephone and how they treat guests on the other end.To assist you with doing this, here are some worker preparing tipson how to prepare your staff without offending them or upsetting them. It's a decent update that we are intended to converse with each other, not type to one another.1) Rally the TroopsevalRather than go up against individuals on an individual premise or single anybody out, it's smarter to adopt a base up strategy to any preparation in your organization. In addition to the fact that this helps staff feel like they are adding to the general improvement of the organization, yet it abstains from having individuals feel like they are being assaulted, which can simply add fuel to the fire.As the CEO or proprietor of the organization, you must communicate worry for the manner in which correspondence and innovation appear to be conflicting. Because messages are being sent doesn't mean they are being comprehended. With a little consideration and thought, everybody could have an incredible effect in transit clients and guests see the organization. That implies everybody wins. You can perceive how this methodology makes the activity a far reaching esteem, as opp osed to a disciplinary activity or discipline. Adopting a constructive strategy to improving, as opposed to changing the manner in which individuals utilize the telephone, will go far in getting support and execution of such ideas.Ask everybody for their thoughts on the most proficient method to improve the telephone frameworks, associations among offices, and obviously, how staff can improve interfacing with people in general, clients, and guests. It may merit thinking about what should be possible to improve email interchanges also, yet that can be a discussion for some other time. It's essential to turn out new activities each in turn so individuals comprehend what is anticipated from them and can concentrate on making that piece of the organization better with their full attention.2) Create a PlanOnce you have gathered the entirety of the recommendations from colleagues and staff, try to record the entirety of the data and configuration it into a report that you can disseminate to everybody for survey. Request that staff give criticism on the report and offer one more opportunity for them to give more contribution at this time.evalOnce you're fulfilled that everybody has perused and comprehended what is required to improve throughout a set time span, you can begin making an arrangement for revealing the new correspondence efforts. To do this, start with one branch of your association and solicit them to take notes from how the various communications happen and what may change after some time as they work to improve their efforts. Some of the desires you may have set may incorporate a worth, for example, noting the phonewithin a specific number of rings, not requiring clients to be postponed for longer than 2 minutes, failing to transfer a call without realizing who is calling first, don't advise individuals to get back to â" serve them now. Improving phone behavior isn't such a great amount about what individuals state, yet how they state it and how quick c lients can get a response. If somebody is waiting for 10 minutes in the wake of finding a solution on the main ring, their expectations are run by the snappy and effective client servers that the appropriate response on the primary ring gave. That leaves individuals feeling tired and overlooked.evalImproving your staff's telephone manners can likewise be accomplished by focusing on what individuals are stating, obviously. In your report, you may give a few instances of how you've watched individuals picking up the telephone and drawing in with customers.Rather than reprimand individuals for their conduct, which is never compelling at any rate, give instances of better approaches to answer the phone. For model, instead of tell a client they are being required to be postponed, making it an organization decide that you generally request consent to require somebody to briefly wait. It's a basic activity, yet it's one that will be felt in an amazingly extraordinary manner for clients who h ave no chance to get of recognizing what's happening at your place of business. Causing them to feel like they are a piece of the discussion, and not an irritation goes a long way.3) Follow up with StaffAfter some season of revealing the new telephone manners esteems, hold another gathering to discuss how the staff feels about the changes.Again, the most ideal approach to prepare your staff on everything from calls to going after inside jobs is to move toward it from a group point of view and a learning perspective. As the chief, you must assistance workers learnto be better at their employments. Giving individuals a stage to discuss how they need to be better gets them more put and engaged with the activities that become your company. As you keep on following up, consistently request new proposals and test those recommendations in littler gatherings before turning it out to the bigger groups. This likewise causes people to feel significant and like they are a piece of the dynamic proc edure. It additionally drops the weight from your shoulders and gets more active deck to settle on decisions that sway the laborers and their work.4) Pivot as You GoOne of the advantages of working with your staff on how they need to be prepared and what zones should be enhanced is that they will adopt more responsibility for strategy and result. This likewise implies you will gain admittance to more understanding and thoughts as your staff works through preparing and implementation.evalWhen preparing staff just because, even on something as ordinary as how to utilize the telephone, it's critical to be adaptable and liberal. Which means, the manner in which you figure it may all go down isn't really the manner in which it will occur at long last â" which perhaps for the better.Given that there are standard practices for what number of organizations pick up the telephone, that appears to be a decent spot to begin, however you may find that those norms or ordinary method of doing thi ngs probably won't suit your necessities, character, or staff. Compelling individuals to act a specific way when it's not the way of life of the organization can imply that individuals won't put as much time or vitality into discovering some new information or executing it.eval5) What to Train Staff On?When it comes to preparing your staff on legitimate telephone manners, there are a few territories that you'll need to consider and talk with your staff on; for instance, you'll need to locate a settled upon greeting when you or any other person gets the telephone at the workplace. The greeting should be certain, cheery and advise the guest regarding the organization name and the name of the individual picking up the telephone. It is additionally considerate to ask the guest how you can help.It may sound something like this, Thank you for calling ABC Company, this is Julie. How might I help you today? If everybody picks up the telephone a similar way, reliably, at that point guests re alize what's in store when they call and will come to connect your image with benevolent, accommodating service.Another zone to consider is the point at which a client professes to have been wronged. Your organization may have the strategy to apologize first and get to the base of the issue second. As opposed to attempt to address the client â" which numerous associations do â" your organization may embrace the strategy that it assumes liability for its wrong-doing, regardless of whether it's simply the client's opinion.evalHow you handle these issues inside can be not quite the same as how you handle them remotely. Guaranteeing that your client has a positive involvement with griping about an issue will turn out to be a higher priority than the issue. Clients can be incapacitated when they get an expression of remorse and afterward the genuine work of fixing the issue can begin.6) Moving ForwardFrom time to time, you may come to find that you have to adjust your approach or retra in your staff to meet the changing needs of your organization, however for the present, start with concurring on a spot to begin and a constructive way to deal with your staff's needs.Training your staff on telephone decorum is something that numerous associations disregard, and it is a discussion that occurs in passing when an assistant or front work area individual is welcomed on. Simply state the organization name and request which office the guest is searching for is frequently all that is offered as guidance or preparing. But when you set aside the effort to work together and you treat telephone manners as something as significant as the remainder of your activity, it shows. As for what a staff part should state when they pick up the telephone, a benevolent welcome, trailed by a challenge to help is sufficient to make your organization stick out. Nowadays, numerous associations disregard the significance of how individuals pick up the telephone since PDAs cause everything to fee l substantially less formal than a call did years ago.Take the additional progression of giving an appropriate welcome and keep your staff engaged with going changes and upgrades to see an uncommon change in how individuals see your organization, your qualities, and your laborers.

You dont need to devise a colossal, determined persona, yet giving individuals motivation to look at your show or your CD before the others can just assistance. Pay off Them Another approach to stand apart from the group is plain old free stuff. Indeed, even press individuals and mark supervisors love getting something to no end, and youll stir your fans into a free for all (and get new fans) by parting with stuff. A few thoughts: Put some cash behind the bar at a show and give free beverage goes to all the business individuals who come to check you out.Give individuals on your mailing list a selective download once per month (be it another tune or a substitute variant of a song)At gigs, pool (for nothing) blend CDs made by the band-each and every individual who joins to your mailing list at the show gets participated in the drawing. Marking Get your name out there. Make up certain stickers, identifications, banners, lighters or whatever else you can think about that incorporate your groups name. At that point, leave the stuff anyplace you can. Pass them out at your preferred clubs, leave them on the record shop counter, banner the light posts-let it all out. Before long, your name will be natural to individuals regardless of whether they dont know why, and when they see your name in the paper promoting a forthcoming show, theyll think hey...I realize that name, I wonder what that is about.. Monitor Your Contacts As you experience these means, odds are that you are going to get a great deal of new contacts en route. A portion of these contacts will be industry individuals and some will be fans. Never forget about a contact. Save a database on your PC for the business individuals you have met and another database of fan contacts. These databases ought to be your first port of require your next limited time battle - and these databases ought to consistently be developing. Dont discount anybody, regardless of whether you dont get a lot of input from them. No one can tell who is going to offer you the reprieve you need. Realize When to Act Small This progression connects to focusing on the correct crowd and distinguishing your objectives - you can spare a great deal of time wasting your time by keeping the little stuff little. While its consistently helpful to stay up with the latest with whats occurring in your profession, that person from Rolling Stone doesnt truly need to know each time your band is playing a half hour set at the neighborhood club, particularly if the nearby press truly hasnt given you much inclusion yet. When youre beginning, the least demanding spot to begin a buzz is your neighborhood. Develop the little stuff to get to the greater stuff. Yet, Know When to Act Large Once in a while, a bigger battle truly is all together. Proceed when you have something important blending, as: Another albumA tourAn significant bit of news, similar to an honor or another record bargain This sort of news warrants reaching both the media and individuals you need to work with, similar to marks, specialists, administrators, etc. Locate the RIGHT Niche As referenced, finding your specialty is useful in getting taken note. There is one admonition, be that as it may - ensure you get saw for the correct reasons. You positively will get some consideration for awful, amateurish conduct, yet the issue is that your music wont be what everybody is discussing - and isnt that what you truly need to be perceived for? Dont do yourself the injury of self-advancing a terrible rep for yourself. Ensure you get saw for your ability. Additionally, dont be phony. In the event that youre not certain what your specialty is yet, dont push it. Remain consistent with yourself and your music. Develop your Database Notwithstanding keeping tracks of the gets in touch with you have, dont be hesitant to enable your database to develop by adding some fantasy contacts to your rundown. Is there a specialist you need to pay heed to you? At that point remember them for your public statement mailing list or promotion mailing list when you have huge news to share. Tell them youre as yet working and as yet assembling your vocation quite soon, they might be thumping on your entryway. Take a Deep Breath For some individuals, the possibility of self-elevating their music to their fans is simple, however calling up the press is out and out unnerving. Unwind. Heres reality a few people you call will be decent, a few people wont be. A few people will stay away for the indefinite future your calls or messages. Some will. You shouldnt think about any of it literally. You certainly shouldnt be hesitant to attempt. Covering groups is the activity of the music media - they hope to get notification from you. Dont be disheartened by somebody who is impolite, or somebody who is respectful, yet at the same time says no. Dont discount them, either. Next time, you may hear yes.

Recruiter or Career Coach - Who You Gonna Call
Recruiter or Career Coach - Who You Gonna Call You neednt go at a job search alone. Carving out your desired career is tough work and if you really want to get ahead, it makes sense to enlist the support of trained specialists who can guide you on your way. Be wary though, the careers support market is saturated with recruiters and career coaches all wanting your business. Its no different to the jobs market being saturated with candidates all vying for the same opportunities. Just as hiring managers have to go to great lengths to ensure the new hire is the best for their business, you need to make sure youre working with the correct professionals, who will get you where you want to go. Career coach or recruiter? Given the abundance of free online information, is a career coach actually worth the money? Should you just apply for roles yourself directly, or work with a specialist recruiter? The need for career support doesnt discriminate age or demographic. Graduates who are novices in the corporate world need help just as much as older generations and those at their professional peak. The type of support needed though will differ, so you need to first identify what you are looking for and what you need. So, who you gonna call? Heres who to go to when you need: Direction If you need help identifying your true passions and the path you should be taking with your career, itd be beneficial to seek the help of a career coach. While some career coaches specialise in getting you the job you already know you want, others specialise in helping you pinpoint what is right for you, and then coach you on how best to get there. Recruiters are specialists at finding suitable candidates for existing opportunities, not the other way around. Commitment If youre time short, paying for a career coach to dedicate themselves to your job search might be what you need. A lot of people feel disillusioned by recruiters who fail to win a job on their behalf. This tends to arise from the common misconception that their recruiter is their career coach, which is not true. Recruiters are paid by their clients, not their candidates. While they probably do have the skills and expertise to provide a career coaching service, they are NOT career coaches. They are talent specialists, whos clients pay them to operate in their best interests, not yours. If its commitment youre after, a career coach might be just what the doctor ordered. They measure their success on your success, not a fee from a client. Industry introductions If you have your heart set on a particular job or company, working with a recruiter who has pre-existing relationships within your preferred industry is probably what you need to help get your foot in the door. You will be able to leverage off their network, instead of having to go in cold on your own. Recruiters will be able to tell you what roles are live, and can thoroughly brief you and market your skills to their clients. Career coaches are great at tracking down opportunities, but probably cant compete with a specialist recruiters network and market knowledge. Specialist industry advice The likelihood is that specialist recruiters will know more about what it actually takes to get ahead in your career than you do their business is built around this expertise and they live and breath it every day. They see candidates just like you make excellent and poor moves, and will be able to coach you on how to get certain positions. A specialist recruiter could likely be the golden ticket to your desired step up. To save money For people who are looking for generic advice on best practice tips and industry-standard job application guidelines, career coaches probably arent needed. A conversation with a recruiter might be all you need to get you on track and give you a bit of free advice. Most recruiters will be happy to have a quick conversation with you, as you might teach them a thing or two as well about the industry they recruit in. Its also important to fully qualify a career coach if you do decide to spend the money . Make sure they have a reputable background in placing people into careers. There are a lot of shams out there; people who claim to be a career coaches after having read one book, and then charge for the delivery of information that is freely available online. The genuine ones will be able to talk you through their successes, credentials and case studies. Confidence motivation Career coaches are most necessary for people who need a boost in confidence and help finding direction in their career. For people who dont have a supportive network around them to fill them with confidence and motivation, a career coach can fill this void, which is something a Youtube video cannot do. Recruiters have to be selective about the candidates they work with, so as to fill their clients brief. The likelihood is, unless you are in process with one of their clients, or the perfect fit for a role they are working on, they wont have the time to spend with you to really boost your personal brand and confidence. Interview and CV advice Depending on what youre after, a recruiter definitely can help you to learn the best practice interview and CV tips. A career coach will also offer specialised bespoke training, at a cost to you. However there is a lot of free information and resources online that it would be worth checking out first, before you spend time or money engaging a professional. You can probably get what you need here by a good Google search! What are your thoughts do you agree on the above? Let us know in the comments below!

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese How Not to Behave in Front of Co-Workers
On the Job by Anita Bruzzese How Not to Behave in Front of Co-Workers Office holiday parties are an annual tradition, whether theyre a potluck among the cubicles or a more elaborate affair complete with a DJ and a chicken dinner. But no matter what kind of soiree youre planning on attending this year, there are a few things you need to remember in order to avoid damaging your career. I know, I know. You feel like you know how tobehave at an office party. Thats what some of these people probably said and then ended up on YouTube and Flickr, their stupid escapades captured for all time. So lets go over the rules one more time.. Never dance alone. Its OK to boogie like its 1999 when youre at home with Just Dance 4 and the B-52s, but doing so at any company gathering is sure to get you posted on YouTube. This rule is even more important if youre the boss, because it will be posted so many times on YouTube and Twitter and Facebook youll become a trending topic overnight. Fluorescent lights make everything worse. If you think your Michael Jackson moves are embarrassing on a barely-lit dance floor, theyre even worse in the middle of the office where cubicles and desks provide a glaring backdrop. If your office party is on the premises, its even more important that you dont make a fool of yourself dancing alone.3.No stunt work.Yes, youve always wanted to slide (see more here)

If You Like it or Not, You Are in Sales.
If You Like it or Not, You Are in Sales. By, Nicole Crimaldi While researching for this post, I came across a great article called 10 Characteristics of Successful Salespeople. Reading the article proved my theory that the qualities of a successful salesperson apply to almost any professional role. But Nicole, Im a CPA! I hate sales. I would never ever go into sales! In todays competitive job market and with technology advancing faster than we can say the word Twitter, employees and business owners alike must make themselves indispensable to those around them. And lets be honest: sometimes perception is reality. This means that your attitude, work ethic, and ability to relate to others are all more important than ever. Lets go back to the CPA who says he is not a salesperson. If promotion time is coming up and we are comparing 5 CPAs within a firm, I would put money on the person with the best sales tactics to get the promotion. Im sure every one of those CPAs are great at using Excel, staying organized, being precise with their calculations, etc. but it is the person who can relate to their clients, listen, set goals and achieve them, and be persistent that will get ahead. After reading several articles, here are my ten favorite qualities of top sellers. Think about how these apply to getting ahead in any field: 1. Sold on themselves. 2. Innovative. 3. Trusted by the Customer. 4. A desire for success. 5. A willingness to learn. 6. Follow up! 7. Ask Quality Questions. 8. Listen. 9. Passionate. 10. A sense of urgency.

17 Clever Ways to Interview Like a Pro
17 Clever Ways to Interview Like a Pro Big interview coming up? Not to worry! The devil is in the detail when it comes to interviewing, make sure you are on top of all the following bits and pieces and you will nail that interview. Here we go: 1. Briefing on the job and company Have you got the full briefing of the job including tasks, reporting lines, location, travel requirements, salary range etc? If not, get it immediately. The more information you have, the more you can tailor your questions and sound like you know what you are talking about. What do you know about the company? Again, make sure you have information on the company and familiarize yourself with their website, check press releases and stock quotes to get an idea of what is happening at the moment. A candidate who is updated on the company and the industry will impress. 2. Briefing on the people Who are the interviewers, how do they fit into the organization, what type of people are they? This is where your online sleuthing skills come very handy. The interviewers will have full information on you courtesy of your CV so itâs only fair you do some digging as well. Scour any resources including LinkedIn, Facebook and other social networking sites for information. 3. Format What is the format and agenda of the interview? You are likely to meet more than one person and they will have divided the questions and topics, find out exactly what to expect so you can be mentally prepared. Candidates sometimes go in expecting a soft chat about fringe benefits with HR but end up doing a four hour technical screening with managers from three continents, donât let this happen to you. 4. Prepare for their questions Break out your CV and ask yourself what you would ask a candidate with this profile. Put yourself in a hiring managerâs shoes and be critical of any gaps/omissions on your CV. Do role plays with a friend and let them play the devilâs advocate. Come up with the ten questions you are most likely to be asked and then come up with the answers. When you are happy with the answers, go for the next set of ten⦠5. Attire Do you know what the dress code is? You would be surprised how many candidates assume they know this and get it horribly wrong. Find out what your interviewers are likely to wear, so that you can wear something similar, only a touch more formal. Ways of finding this out would be calling the company reception/HR/line manager and asking. This also gives you an opportunity to further acquaint yourself with the people. Related: How To Dress for Your Job Interview 6. Directions Do you have the route description and have you called the company reception to double check everything? The worst thing that could happen is you arriving late; avoid this by giving yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. 7. Arrival Act confident and courteous. Strike up a conversation with the receptionist; make sure you leave a good impression with everyone in that office. When the interviewer picks you up, offer a firm handshake and crack on with some small talk before the meeting starts. By mirroring the interviewers body language, you will make him or her feel comfortable with you from the outset. 8. Know whom to butter up If there are multiple interviewers, understand who the decision maker is and massage their ego. They will want to know that you will be a good worker and not cause any trouble. Most managers have experienced troublesome members of staff and in the process learned this the hard way so they will look out for any signs of rebel behavior. 9. Selling yourself When talking about yourself, tell stories, case studies and examples. Storytelling is story selling, everyone loves a good story and so does your interviewer. Make yourself stand out by rehearsing a few stories about your achievements, how you dealt with conflict and how great a team player you are. The interviewers might see up to 20 candidates in one day so an interesting story worth repeating will anchor your interview in their minds. Related: Do You Know How to Sell Yourself on a Job Interview? 10. Clarity Say what you can do, what you want to learn and where you want to go in your career. A candidate that demonstrates clarity in the interview instills confidence. Nobody can expect you to say exactly where you will be in 5 years time but a general vision is required. 11. Strengths and weaknesses Everyone knows their strengths, try to limit them to 3. As for weaknesses, the best athletes in the world can give you their main weaknesses straight away. They are aware of them and working on them and so should you. This demonstrates your maturity and insight, which are crucial skills for any company. The old chestnut of giving a weakness that can be seen as strength isnât going to work. The interviewers have heard the âworkaholic; and âperfectionistâ routine more times than you have had hot meals. Related: How to Answer the Greatest Weaknesses Question 12. Blabber Please do not waffle! I cannot reiterate this enough. Answer the questions, no more and no less. A candidate that goes off on a tangent, not only indicates lack of focus but possibly also nervousness. If you donât know a subject, tell the interviewer this instead of trying to sound better than you are. They will appreciate your honesty and if you say that you are keen to learn more within this field, again you demonstrate a willingness to work on your weaknesses. 13. Grace under fire A few interviewers will use various techniques with the aim to push you and seeing how you react under pressure. They want to see if you will give back âemotionalâ responses. Donât get caught in this, stay professional and level headed. The ideal candidate will stay calm and analyze the situation; the crash and burn candidate will get very excited and rant. 14. Interview the interviewer After the incoming shells itâs your turn to return fire. Itâs only fair that you are told whatâs in it for you after having talked about your value add. Enquire about career paths, attrition levels, how often there are conflicts in the team, why people have left in the past. You should prepare up to ten clever questions and be prepared to ask follow up questions to the answers you are given. Related: 9 Killer Questions Candidates Ought to Ask the Interviewer 15. Buying signals Questions about your salary expectation, potential start date and booked vacation days are classic buying signals. Look out for any others, such as âcould you do work in this area as wellâ or âdo you speak language x? This means they have a few ideas around your application. 16. End of the Interview Close them down by asking for feedback straight away. Chances are the interviewers have made their decision about you already so go ahead and ask them. By asking you show interest as well as business acumen, even if you do not get the reply you want they will respect you for asking the question. If you work in sales and donât ask the question to close the sale, you can only guess what impression that will give. 17. After the Interview Dale Carnegie said to send a thank you note to every host, this applies for interviews as well. A simple email with a couple of lines of pleasantries will do. Again, this is a way for you to stand out from the other candidates and come across as more professional. Further reading: 8 Essential Interview Tips by a Recruiter
